Deputy Director

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL

Joan (Jody) A. Singer is the Deputy Director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. As the Center’s Deputy Director, Ms. Singer will share responsibility for leading one of NASA’s largest field installations, with almost 6,000 civil service and contractor personnel, an annual budget of approximately $2.5 billion, and a broad spectrum of human spaceflight, science, and technology development.

Since June 2013, Ms. Singer has served as Manager of the Flight Programs and Partnerships Office, managing the Center's portfolio in human exploration transportation and advanced development projects; delegated program roles for planetary missions and technology demonstrations; and International Space Station life support systems, research facilities, payload integration and operations. She has also served as the Center's front door to identify, promote, and enable critical partnership opportunities with external partners to enable the achievement of our nation's space exploration goals and objectives.

Since beginning her NASA career in 1985 as an engineer in Marshall’s Professional Intern Program, Ms. Singer has held positions of increasing scope and responsibility. She joined the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) Project Office in 1986, responsible for tracking and evaluating contractor hardware deliveries for the SSME. In 1990, she moved to the External Tank Project where she served in progressively responsible positions, including Business Manager, Assistant Manager, and Deputy Manager. She was named Assistant Manager of the Shuttle Projects Office in 2000 and, upon being appointed to the Senior Executive Service in May 2002, was named the Office’s Deputy Manager. In December 2002, Ms. Singer was assigned to manage the Reusable Solid Rocket Booster Project Office, where she led her team through numerous Shuttle missions, including Columbia Return-to-Flight activities.

In September 2007, Ms. Singer was named Deputy Manager of the Shuttle Propulsion Office and assumed increased responsibilities in 2010 when she accepted the role of Deputy of the Ares Projects Office. In this dual leadership capacity, Ms. Singer was responsible for the safe fly-out of the Space Shuttle Program and the transition of the workforce and assets to support the development efforts of the next human heavy lift launch vehicle. In 2011, with the stand-up of the Space Launch System Program, Ms. Singer was named Deputy Manager, responsible for the formulation and establishment of the office including the successful completion of significant SLS milestones, including the Systems Requirements Review, Systems Design Review, Key Decision Point B, and the Preliminary Design Review.

Ms. Singer earned a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Her dedication and commitment to NASA have earned her numerous awards, including the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive, two NASA Outstanding Leadership medals, a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, a Space Flight Awareness Leadership Award, and a Silver Snoopy Award.

A native of Hartselle, Alabama, Ms. Singer and her husband Chris, who reside in Huntsville, have three children.
